The D&H Conservancy was formed in 2006 to help preserve what is left of this remarkable undertaking begun over 175 years ago.  While the canal and gravity railroad were built to make money, they did much more than that.  They brought the entire region into the 19th century technologically.  The effects are still felt to this day.  Carbondale, Honesdale, Port Jervis, Wurtsboro, Summitville and Phillipsport are just some of the towns that owe both their names and prosperity to the canal and railroad.
Much of the efforts of our predecessors is still visible today.  Many miles of rail bed and canal are walkable now and much more could be with some help.  Several locks and other impressive  structures remain and could use some repairing.
Above all, we would like to create a Heritage Trail from Eddyville to Carbondale so that the public can both enjoy and learn from the tremendous achievement that is the Delaware and Hudson Canal and Gravity Railroad.
